Windows, windows, windows!
In early October, after completing the roof panel repairs on Wye Invader Two, we turned our attention to the inner windows. The 9 inner window frames are constructed of plywood and hardwood, with varnished outer surfaces facing into the cabin. These frames were last inspected in 2019, when they were found to be in good condition, at that time we sanded, revarnished, and reinstalled them. However, 6 years later, upon inspection, we discovered that most of the plywood inner surfaces had de-laminated, while the inward-facing hardwood frames remained intact.
I consulted with my friend, Dave James, a master craftsman. We decided to deliver 3 window frames to him to assess the time and effort required for repair before removing the remaining 6.
A week later, I received a call informing me that the frames were ready. Dave had done an excellent job repairing them. I spent the next 3 days applying 3 coats of marine varnish to each frame.
The following weekend, Andy and I returned to Sharpness to deliver the varnished frames to Wye Invader Two, and to collect the remaining 6 frames, and drop them off with Dave James for reconstruction.
Two weeks later, the final 6 frames were re-constructed. I spent 10 days applying 3 coats of marine varnish to each frame at home, as the colder weather allowed for better drying conditions indoors.
On Wednesday, November 27th, we returned to Sharpness to complete the installation of the final 6 frames. A week later, Andy and I verified the security of all frames and re-installed the curtains along with a new blind to finalise the project.
